Cal watched her with the kittens and knew he’d done a good thing. The smile on her face as she played with the little balls of fur made him grin, too. Any doubts he might have had about whether or not he was doing the right thing vanished.

But he still asked, “So you’ll give them a home?”

She looked up from where she was sitting on the kitchen floor with the lively kittens and slowly shook her head at him. “You knew I would. That’s why you brought them instead of just calling.”

“You mean text. No one calls anymore. Haven’t you noticed that?” He rubbed a hand across his mouth.

She gave him an exasperated look. “Don’t change the subject. You knew I would be a soft touch. That’s why you brought them to me.”

“That’s only part of it.” He hunkered down next to her. “You’re caring and kind.”

A little too tenderhearted. But maybe that wasn’t so bad.

“A true humanitarian,” he added with a grin.

She made a noise that indicated skepticism.

He quirked an eyebrow. “Too much?”

“Don’t push your luck, Calvin.”

Before he could respond or process how he felt hearing his full name from her lips, one of the kittens chomped down on the end of his shoelace and scampered away, pulling the lace along. “Hey, you, come back with that.”

He grabbed the kitten, who dropped the aglet, scrunched up her face and meowed. His gaze bounced between Olive and the kitten. She burst out laughing and he joined her.

Giving someone a pet—or two!—was risky. But he’d suspected she’d react favorably. He’d based his decision on the fact she had given him a good feeling. Like he’d placed his trust in the right person.
